Things to consider before you hire a wedding photographer

If you are planning a wedding you’ve probably seen it already. 52 questions to ask your photographer. 100 things to ask before you book. Some things that you HAVE to know before you hire a wedding vendor. Some of these are great and very important to know (How long after the wedding will I get the images? How many pictures will you take? What different parts of the day do you and your second shooter husband cover?) but others, as a bride are really not necessary knowledge to you (What type of cameras do you use?* What type of paper do you print your albums on? Ideally you’ll see a sample and this won’t matter!). We love answering your questions and hope most of them are addressed here on the blog before we even meet, but how about before you even contact a photographer. What are some things you should ask yourself before you even click that “contact” button? Here are a few we hope you consider!

1. Are our personalities compatible? You are going to be spending most of the day with your photographer. In some cases more than your hubby-to-be. So we love to make sure our personalities jive and that you have as much fun hanging out with us as we do with you!
2. Do I like their style? Are their images ones I can imagine hanging on the wall of my house? Do I love the light and airy? Or the more artistic look? All photographers are unique and shoot differently because we are artists! Make sure you love the way they capture images and showcase them on their website or blog.
3. Have you seen a full wedding on their site? It’s pretty easy to get 2 or 3 great images out of almost every situation but have you seen what a full day looks like through their eyes?
River Company Radford Catholic Wedding Pictures-11_FB4. How will I get the images? Is it all the digital files? A box of prints? An album? A combination? What do you want to do with your wedding images? (PRINT THEM!) and does the photographer offer that?
5. What images are most important to me? Family formals? Details? Romantic portraits? Does the photographer showcase those on their site and do they shoot them well? The things that are most important to you should be able to be shown well through the photographer’s eyes!
So, what do you think? Are there other questions you would have liked answered before you even contacted your photographer? Comment below and I would love to answer some of them for future brides!

* If they are shooting weddings it’s a good one! Does it matter if it’s the 5D mark iii or the D800? Those numbers don’t even mean much to most people unless you’re a camera nerd like me :) But for the record we use the Canon 5D mark iii.
