Happy Labor Day!
I hope you all are somewhere in the sun by the water and taking some time to soak up the last bit of summer. We are doing just that from the OBX and loving every minute! We left on Friday to head down here, stopping of to have dinner with family half way. Then we started to make our way here Saturday. Well if you’ve been on the internet at all you’ll know that Hermine threatened our drive the whole way here. (I’m mad at her for that and for the fact it isn’t Hermione :)
We were just an hour from the island and so excited to finally be on vacation when we passed a sign that said “Turn around, 64 closed”. If you’ve ever been to the Outer Banks you know that 64 is really the only way on to the island unless you go way North or way South. So we got as far as we could and the road was blocked by State Troopers and Marshals and a ambulance forcing everyone to turn around. It turns out with all the wind from Hermine had flipped a tractor trailer and blocked the entire bridge. So we sat and sat and sat (after sending our other vehicle of travelers on the detour North since they were behind us and it wouldn’t be as much of a back track). They kept saying the bridge should be open by 3. So we waited. It looked like they had gotten a lot clear but then we heard there was another accident on the next bridge we had to cross! And then they closed every bridge to the island because of high winds. We were thinking we were going to have to sleep in the car!
Finally about 5 we heard that the rest of our crew had gotten across from the North, so we pulled out of our huge line of traffic (we were near the front of the line and it was stopped for at least 10 miles behind us) and then we headed an hour back the way we’d come and headed north adding 2.5 hours to our trip! Thankfully though we made it to the house that day about 7. It was crazy. What should have been a short 4 hours on the road on Saturday turned into 8. I have never been happier to arrive at a destination. Thankfully the storm isn’t affecting much else, it’s been a little windy and cloudy – but she’s supposed to move on by tomorrow and the 80 degree temps return! So after this, I’ll be signing off for the rest of the week to relax and enjoy our break. I still have a great post for you on Thursday though, so don’t miss it!
And now a few musings before we head to the beach!
- The only good thing about being stuck in the car was having plenty of time to finish re-reading Ender’s Game. The brilliance of this author strikes me every time. He wrote it in the early 80’s but describes things like the internet and “online messaging and debates” (facebook) in a scary accurate way. How did he know our society would be this dependent on technology?
- The coffee maker here at our beach house is a dual drip-coffee and keurig. I love it. And it reminded me of this list and how I want everything on it :)
- Spoiler alert: We are a few episodes behind on Master Chef but the one we watched this week made me actually turn the show off. I’m threatening not to watch it ever again. My all time favorite character got kicked off and I was so sad. It could have been because I barely slept last week but yes, when Terry was asked to leave I cried a little. Ugh, he was so nice and sweet and just looked so confused when they didn’t like his dish. Can he have his own show please? I would watch that. Now I don’t even care who wins :(
- For knowing and loving The Princess Bride so well, this quiz was actually pretty tricky.
That’s all for this Monday. Don’t miss a sweet family on the blog on Thursday! Now I’m off to enjoy this view:
