What do I wear?

The most stressful part of photo sessions.

  1. First things first, BE COMFORTABLE! Wear something that isn’t too tight or restricting and that you feel comfortable in. If it fits well you won’t be worrying about it during the session.
  2. Along those lines, be yourself. Dress in something you would normally wear and something that you feel you look good in. You know those outfits that you just love and feel beautiful and confident in – think about those pieces. The more confident you are (and the less you are worried about how tight your shirt/pants/etc. is) the better that confidence will come across in the photos. Also, think about each person’s style – if they wouldn’t wear it normally then don’t put them in it for a photograph! This picture is about expressing who you are.
  3. Now for colors: Instead of matching, think coordinating. Don’t be too matchy-matchy in the same color, or the same outfit, but rather pick a base color and then one or two pops of coordinating color. Some examples would be a base of grey with pops of yellow and pink, or black with pops of purple and green. You get the idea – but don’t worry about everything matching exactly just that it can coordinate.
  4. Stick with solid colors instead of patterns that might be distracting, or if one of you is in patterns the other one should stick to solids.
  5. We all know certain colors we love ourselves in and others that wash you out, pick the ones you love – even if they are bold and bright.
  6. Add layers and textures. It creates a more visually interesting photograph. A light cardigan with a belt, a button down over a long sleeve, a skirt over tights, the possibilities are endless! Also add ruffles, knits, denim, or other textures for added dimensions to your photos.
  7. Make sure you are both on the same level style-wise. Normally people bring two outfits to an engagement session – one dressy and one more casual, but it’s up to you! However try not to mix and match styles. And if you are looking for a fun option I always recommend www.renttherunway.com – you can rent a fun dress for the “dressy” part of your session! But, think about the location too – if you’re in an urban setting wear more trendy clothing, outdoors stay a little more relaxed.
  8. The main thing to avoid is anything too trendy, with logos, pictures, etc. These will distract from the picture and also make the photo less “timeless”.
  9. Bring comfy shoes! We will be walking so bring shoes to switch out in between locations. But don’t feel like you need to wear heels at all! If you are not yourself in 3 inch heels, leave them at home! If you wear your favorite flats everywhere, show up in those. These pictures are a reflection of who you are as a couple :)

The most important thing to remember is don’t let color choices and coordination stress you out! Be comfortable, stay true to your style, wear something you feel beautiful in, and no one will notice the clothes – they’ll see your happy, fun, relaxed portraits. Remember, we are just capturing what you look like in a moment in time – and how you feel will be reflected, even if there is a logo on your shirt :)
